About the museum
The Skanzen lidových tradic a řemesel (Open-Air Museum of Folk Traditions and Crafts) was built in 2002 in Bolatice, on Svobody Street next to the church. It is located in a farmhouse and plot that belonged to Jiří Burian, and it illustrates well the traditional village dwelling of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Residents of Bolatice played a major part in the construction and donated most of the exhibits. The project was supported by a grant from the SAPARD programme; the municipality received CZK 1.6 million for it under the project for the reconstruction of a cycle path and the support of tourism in the Hlučínsko microregion.
Visitors can see the residential parts of the house (the jizba, or main room, the kitchen and the maid’s room), the laundry, a horse stable, a cowshed, a srubek (log storehouse), or granary, and a shed and barn with craftsmen’s tools, farm machinery and household implements. Further rooms are devoted to the daily life and traditions of women, the life of children, and to men and crafts. In 2022–2023 the roof and part of the interior were renovated.
In 2013 the open-air museum was expanded with a collection of glacial erratics and flint stones (pazourky), donated by Jiří Dudek of Hlučín, which is the largest of its kind in the Czech Republic. Later an experimental archaeology exhibition was added, in which visitors can see prehistoric products and the living conditions of prehistoric hunters. Cultural events also take place at the open-air museum, for example maypole raising, carol singing and a living nativity scene in December.
