About the museum

The Rosenberger Gut in Lackenhäuser was built in 1818 by Matthias Rosenberger. The poet and painter Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868) stayed here several times between 1855 and 1866 and felt deeply connected to the landscape. For a long time, memorial rooms for him were located in the estate's Ladenstöckl (shop annex).

In September 2014 a modern museum over three floors was created from this. The ground floor tells the history of the estate; the second floor deals with Stifter's biography, and the third floor with his work: first editions of his books give an overview of his literary output, and a slide show honours the lesser-known painter. In the Stifter Cinema a film runs about the snowstorm of winter 1866 that Stifter recorded in his story 'Aus dem Baierischen Wald' ('From the Bavarian Forest'); during opening hours, further film adaptations of Stifter motifs are also shown.

A large room serves for readings and lectures, and a lounge with a library invites visitors to linger. According to the municipality, it is the only museum in Germany dedicated to the poet.
