About the museum
Birthplace house no. 21 in Horní Planá dates from the 17th century. The Stifter family lived there from around 1660, earning a living from farming, weaving and trading in linen and yarn. On 23 October 1805 the writer and painter Adalbert Stifter was born here. He spent his childhood in the house, but after his father’s death in 1817 he left to study at Kremsmünster. He never forgot his native region and the Šumava, and returned there throughout his life; his last visit was in autumn 1867.
Until the end of 1904 the house remained in the Stifter family’s ownership. In 1910 it was bought by the municipality of Horní Planá. After a fire in 1934 the building was restored and served as a municipal library and flat. From 1956 preparations were made to set up a museum memorial, led by Hugo Rokyta and Jan Huleš, director of the Český Krumlov museum. The memorial was solemnly opened on 23 October 1960, the 155th anniversary of the writer’s birth.
The current bilingual Czech-German exhibition Adalbert Stifter a rodný kraj was created in 2005. It presents the history of the house, the town and the notable places in the surroundings, as well as the life and work of the writer, including his painting. The house is owned by the town of Horní Planá; the memorial is operated as a branch of the Regional Museum in Český Krumlov. Seasonal exhibitions are held in the attic, and cultural events take place in the courtyard.
