About the museum
The museum was founded in 1984 as a branch of the Muzeum Regionalne in Wałbrzych. Since 2006 it has been an independent cultural institution, run by the local authorities of Kudowa-Zdrój. It was set up around an existing residential and farm building with a forge, built in the mid-19th century, in a valley on the northern slope of Pstrążnica mountain.
The concept for the museum envisages 17 historic buildings from the Sudeten Foothills. Open to visitors are, among others, an inn from Szalejów Dolny from the early 19th century, cottages from Kudowa-Zakrze and Nowa Łomnica, a barn from Kudowa-Czermna, a koźlak windmill (trestle windmill) from Jabłów and an alarm bell tower from Gołaczów. These are complemented by numerous small structures such as wayside shrines, an apiary and a well.
The interiors are furnished with furniture and farm equipment from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, showing daily village life. The open-air museum also has the educational Ziołowy Ogród Baby Jagi (Baba Jaga’s Herb Garden), with an animal enclosure and a folk playground, and the museum runs museum lessons, workshops and outdoor events.
