About the museum
The Šumperk museum began as a private collection as early as 1896. At the beginning of the 20th century it was housed in the Dominican monastery, and later in the nearby Geschader House. After the Second World War the Czech state administration took it over, and the collections gradually settled in Pavlínin dvůr, which the museum has used since the 1960s.
Pavlínin dvůr was originally a 19th-century farmstead with cowsheds, a dairy and storerooms. The north wing was rebuilt into a neo-Renaissance palace, completed in 1882 by Baron Karl Chiari, who named it after his wife Paulina. Today the building is a listed monument; besides the museum it houses a tourist information centre, and the inner courtyard hosts cultural and social events.
The permanent exhibition Příroda a dějiny severozápadní Moravy (Nature and History of North-Western Moravia) is installed in eleven halls and is accompanied by an audio guide with the voice of Baroness Paulina Chiari. The museum also uses five exhibition spaces for short-term exhibitions and has run the Muzejíčko for families with children since 2016. The Vlastivědné muzeum v Šumperku also has branches in Úsov, Zábřeh, Mohelnice and the Adolf Kašpar Memorial in Loštice.
