Zámek Velké Losiny

Late Renaissance chateau of the Žerotín lords with rare surviving interiors, leather wall hangings and tapestries, linked to the Losiny witch trials.

Opening hoursAdmission 220 Kč

About the museum

The chateau in Velké Losiny was built by the important Moravian Žerotín family at the end of the 16th century, on the site of a dilapidated fortress. The exterior façades are decorated with sgraffito in a letter-like pattern (psaníčkové sgrafito), and the rusticated arches of the courtyard arcades already foreshadow the emerging Baroque. When the Baroque arrived, the chateau was richly furnished, and it survived the Thirty Years' War without serious damage. This is why rare interiors have survived, including a collection of tapestries and leather wall hangings.

The Losiny chateau is linked to the so-called witch trials, which took place here between 1678 and 1692 and claimed 56 lives. In 1802 the Liechtenstein family bought the indebted estate. They had the Baroque garden converted into an English landscape park. In the first half of the 19th century they furnished the Empire wing, and later further rooms in the style of the Second Rococo, so that the old chateau became a romantic summer residence.

The chateau has still not been electrified, so evening tours with torches take place in summer. The oldest two-seater sedan chair in the world and the chateau library can also be seen. The complex includes a park with rare trees. The chateau is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ).
