About the museum

The Wallachian Open-Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm is the oldest open-air museum in Central Europe. The idea of saving the folk buildings of Wallachia was put forward before the First World War by the brothers Alois and Bohumír Jaroněk, who led the local museum and folklore society in Rožnov. The museum itself was founded in 1925, when the Wooden Town, a group of original log buildings moved to the square in Rožnov, first opened to the public.

In the 1960s the extensive Wallachian Village began to take shape, an area recalling the mountain villages of the early 20th century, which opened to visitors in 1972. Later the Mill Valley was added, with a water mill, sawmill, fulling mill and forge powered by water, made accessible in 1982. The museum also manages the buildings at Pustevny and at Fojtství Jasenná, and is gradually building a new area called Kolibisko.

Since 2018 the museum has been part of the National Open-Air Museum. Visitors can see original log buildings, traditional crafts and farming, as well as many folk events during the year. The Wallachian Village has more than seventy buildings.
