About the museum

The foundations of museum work in Frenštát rest on ethnographic collecting, which Jiří Felix promoted in 1892. The ethnographic department held an exhibition in 1895 and, when it ceased to exist in 1897, handed about eighty objects over to the town as the basis of a future museum. The town museum, however, only opened on 25 December 1951, in a house on Horní Street; its first head was Alois Zbavitel.

In 1959 the museum moved to the second floor of the town hall on Míru Square, where it remained until 2002. From 1965 it was a branch of the Vlastivědný ústav in Nový Jičín, the predecessor of today's Muzeum Novojičínska. In 2007 the town offered the museum the building of the former boys' school from 1876 at Horní Street 220. After reconstruction with support from European funds and the Moravian-Silesian Region, the museum officially opened it on 16 June 2007; the building is a cultural monument.

Visitors today find seven permanent exhibitions here: Paměť města, on the oldest history of Frenštát; Jitřenka východu, on the changes in the small town after 1848; Kolébka české turistiky, on the first Czech tourist association, Radhošť (founded 1884); Doteky přírody, on the nature of the Beskydy foothills; Pánbu, všichni svatí a ti druzí, on folk piety; Člunek zpívá, on weaving; and Tam za mořem, on Czech emigrants to North America. The corridors also display a collection of shooting targets.
