About the museum

The Museum of Oil Extraction and Geology, commonly called the Oil Museum, stands in the grounds of the former barracks at the centre of Hodonín's oil industry. The idea of establishing it arose in 2001, the building was reconstructed from 2004, and the museum opened to the public in 2006. It is run by volunteers and enthusiasts of the association of the same name.

The indoor exhibition maps the geological, historical and technical aspects of extracting and processing oil in the Hodonín area, where oil and natural gas have been extracted for more than a hundred years. Visitors pass through the historical hall, the technical hall and the geological hall, and can also view a collection of minerals, rocks and fossils.

Around the building is an outdoor technology park with pump jacks known as kozlíky (nodding donkeys), production crosses, compressors, separators and drill bits, and recently also the Geopark of Rocks of the Vienna Basin. In 2019 a contact tourist centre with an information office for technical monuments and a mini exhibition called Cesta ropy (The Path of Oil) was added to the museum.
