About the museum
The history of the gallery and its collections is linked to the Association of Moravian Fine Artists (SVUM), which operated in Hodonín from 1907 to 1959. Its leading figures included the brothers Joža and Franta Uprka and other artists associated with Slovácko. The association’s greatest achievement was the construction of its own Art House, designed by the architect Antonín Blažek, who won the competition of 1910; the building was solemnly opened on 4 May 1913.
The building was used mainly for exhibitions, and the association also ran pottery and weaving courses there. At the end of the Second World War it was damaged in the bombing of Hodonín, but the art collections survived; after repairs the house reopened on 8 June 1947. After the association was dissolved in 1959, the Hodonín Gallery of Fine Art has been housed here since 1960; it also looks after the collections of the original association.
The gallery presents modern and contemporary art with an emphasis on regional ties. The collections comprise painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking, photography, and an ethnographic fund with folk and Habán ceramics. The largest part of the sculpture is the estate of the sculptor Franta Uprka.
