About the museum
Construction of the Buchlovice château began shortly before 1700, when Count Jan Dětřich Petřvaldský had it built as a gift for his wife, Anežka Eleonora of the Italian Colonna family. According to the château, its layout in the style of a villa rustica is the purest example of an Italian baroque villa in Central Europe; from the beginning it was accompanied by a baroque garden.
The château’s significance grew around 1900 under Count Leopold Berchtold, a diplomat in the Austro-Hungarian service in London, Paris and St Petersburg. In 1908 the Russian and Austro-Hungarian foreign ministers met here, and the talks led to a division of spheres of influence in the Balkans. In 1912 Berchtold became the penultimate foreign minister of Austria-Hungary, and the château served as a representative residence, from which its present form and luxurious furnishings also derive.
The château belongs to the state and is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ). Visitors can take a guided tour of the château or buy a separate ticket for the château park. Depending on the season, the grounds also contain an exhibition of fuchsias and a wildlife rescue station.
