About the museum
The gallery is housed in a former military armoury, a Baroque building completed in 1723 to designs by Leandro Anquisola and Jakob Albl. The building has two wings and a square courtyard, and the front of the building is dominated by an entrance portal decorated with military attributes. It ceased its original use at the beginning of the 1780s (18th century) and later served, among other things, as an infirmary, a post office and an orphanage.
In the second half of the 20th century the Slovácké muzeum acquired the building and, during a fundamental reconstruction at the turn of the 50s and the 1960s, adapted it to the needs of a gallery. The gallery was opened to the public on 21 October 1962. Further reconstructions took place in 1990–1992 and after the floods of 1997–1998.
The gallery manages the art collection of the Slovácké muzeum. In the attic there is a permanent exhibition, Art of South-East Moravia; in the other halls short-term exhibitions, concerts, lectures and creative studios for children have been held. In the courtyard stands the original Baroque fountain from the early 18th century and, since 2025, also the Stone Garden with stone artefacts and features for people with visual impairments. The gallery is currently closed for a long period due to reconstruction.
