About the museum
The Památník Velké Moravy (Great Moravia Memorial) in Staré Město stands above the foundations of a cemetery church, which was discovered by archaeologist Vilém Hrubý in 1949. It is regarded as the demonstrably first architecture from the Great Moravian period on Czech territory. The memorial opened in 1961 and has been a national cultural monument since 1969.
The building underwent reconstruction in 2008–2009, and on 16 January 2010 it reopened to the public; since then it has been open all year round. In September 2022, an extension was added, the Cyrilometodějské centrum (Cyril and Methodius Centre), which contains a further multimedia exhibition as well as an archaeological workplace, storerooms and a laboratory for processing finds.
The memorial is managed by the Slovácké muzeum (Moravian Slovak Museum) in Uherské Hradiště. The foundations of the church and part of the burial ground are included in the exhibition on the state of Great Moravia and life in a Slavic stronghold.
