About the museum

The Galerie Joži Uprky was founded in 1995 in Prague on the initiative of entrepreneur and collector Petr Vašt. It grew out of a collection that Zdeněk Zemek, an entrepreneur from Uherské Hradiště, built up in cooperation with him. The gallery contributed significantly to promoting Uprka’s work at home and abroad, for example in 2002 in the United Arab Emirates. The Nadace Moravské Slovácko (Moravské Slovácko Foundation), together with the National Gallery in Prague, also took part in the large jubilee exhibition marking the 150th anniversary of the painter’s birth, held at the Valdštejn Riding School in Prague at the turn of 2011 and 2012.

The plan to set up a gallery in part of the reconstructed former Jesuit college in Uherské Hradiště arose from cooperation between the town and the Moravské Slovácko Foundation. The core of the permanent exhibition is the largest collection of Uprka’s works, supplemented by loans from the National Gallery in Prague, the Moravian Gallery in Brno, the Gallery of Fine Art in Ostrava, the Olomouc Museum of Art, the Zlín Regional Gallery, the Slovácko Museum in Uherské Hradiště and the parish in Strážnice. Sculptures by the painter’s younger brother, sculptor Franta Úprka, are also on show, and the corridors with the original wooden ceiling display large-format photographs from Joža Uprka’s life.

Joža Uprka was born on 25 October 1861 in Kněžduba near Strážnice. His whole life was inspired by the Moravian Slovácko region, its people, traditions, festivals and folk costumes. He was among the first Czech painters to adopt the aesthetics of Impressionism, and with his approach to the relationship between colour and light he opened the way to modern realism.
