About the museum
The Vsetín château was built in the first decade of the 17th century (first mentioned in 1610) on the foundations of a 15th-century fortified house. It was built by Lukrecie Nekšovna of Landek with her first husband, Arkleb of Víckov. In the 18th century the Illésházy family rebuilt it several times, and a fire in 1708 burned it down to its bare walls.
The château acquired its Classicist form in 1833–1834 under its owner Josef z Wachtler, who also founded the château park. A fire in 1915 destroyed the roof and tower; the Thonet family restored the château in 1924 to its appearance before the fire. From 1938 it belonged to Marie Baťová and her son Tomáš, and in February 1949 it passed to national administration.
After damage in the 1950s, a general restoration took place in 1967–1974, and on 9 May 1975 the château was opened to the public. Today it is used by the Muzeum regionu Valašsko.
