Skagen Odde Naturcenter
Nature and culture center designed by Jørn Utzon at the edge of the heath near Grenen, with exhibitions on the nature of Skagen Odde, on Utzon, and on art.
About the museum
The architect Jørn Utzon drew up the nature center in 1989; it was built in 1999–2000 under the direction of his son Jan Utzon. The building first opened to visitors on May 19, 2000. It lies at the edge of the nature area around Grenen, the northern tip of Denmark, and is meant to explain how this spit of land formed and why it keeps growing to this day.
Utzon's idea was a quiet building that grows out of the landscape: a wall about four meters high encloses a complex of just over 4,000 square meters, from which only the lookout tower and the entrance area protrude. Inside the wall, pavilions, each with its own theme, are grouped around sheltered courtyards, and openings in the wall open up views of the heath.
Alongside a permanent exhibition on the special nature of Skagen Odde, the center shows an exhibition about Jørn Utzon and the creation of the building as well as art and design exhibitions that change every year. A nature guide offers walks in the surrounding area, and in the Spørgehjørnet (question corner) you can take a close look at stones, amber, and, depending on the season, live animals from the area.
