About the museum

The mill was built in 1859 by Christian Jacobsen from Skovby as a wooden gallery-type Dutch windmill near Østerholm on the island of Als and moved in 1888 to its present location in Elstrup. Jacobsen added a bakery to the business and supplied rye flour to bakers in Sønderborg. After his death in 1912, the miller Ernst Linow, who came from Germany, bought the property at auction in 1913.

His son Hans Linow took over in 1935 and ran the mill successfully at first, but after the Second World War roller mills and modern technology put pressure on the business. From 1954 to 1969 it was leased to a grain and feed company; with Hans Linow's retirement in 1969, its time as a village mill ended. From 1975, his grandson Ernst Linow gradually developed the mill into a museum.

The structure has been protected as a listed monument since 1999 and is considered the only gallery mill in Denmark that is built entirely of wood and has kept its milling machinery. The sails were removed in 1997 because of necessary restoration. In 2018 the independent institution Elstrup Mølle- og Møllerimuseum bought the mill in order to restore it and use it as a place for the village.

The interior is preserved in the condition of its working days and shows the furnishings and equipment of several generations of millers. The museum is still under development; the friends' association Møllens Venner holds markets, music evenings, and lectures in the mill, the proceeds of which go toward its preservation.
