About the museum

The transformer tower between Over and Neder Tandslet on Als was built in 1922 from red brick in the so-called church tower style, following standard plans by the Aarhus firm Eriksen og Sardemann. It was one of about 40 such towers built on Als in the 1920s, when the region was connected to the power grid after reunification with Denmark in 1920. At first the electricity came from the Sønderborg power plant, and from 1924 from the high-voltage facility in Aabenraa.

In 2002 the tower was restored with its original equipment on local initiative and set up as a museum. At about 7 square meters, it is considered one of the smallest museums in Denmark; it was a branch of the cross-border network Industriemuseum Schleswig.

The museum became known beyond the region in 2008, when the Norwegian author Roger Pihl dedicated a book to it. It uses the small tower as a starting point to tell of the history of electricity, of the referendum and border shift of 1920, and of the electrification of the regained part of the country.
