About the museum

In the summer and autumn of 1941, the German Wehrmacht built two army coastal batteries around Hirtshals. The 10th Battery west of the town initially received four 10.5 cm field guns on concrete platforms; from summer 1942 it was expanded into a fortress as part of the Atlantic Wall, largely completed in 1943. In December 1943, Field Marshal Rommel inspected the positions at Hirtshals. In the end, the cost of building the bunkers in Denmark was paid by the Danish state.

In 1991, the Bunkergruppe Hirtshals, a small group of volunteer bunker enthusiasts, began uncovering the nearly 70 bunkers around the lighthouse. The result was a museum site of about 450 by 750 meters at the foot of Hirtshals Fyr.

Today 3.5 kilometers of trenches connect 69 bunkers as well as gun, mortar, and machine-gun positions and radar and searchlight installations; in addition to the 10th Battery, positions of the German harbor commander are also included. In a crew bunker, an exhibition provides information about the battery and Hirtshals during the occupation, while other bunkers have been refitted with their original furnishings. The museum belongs to Vendsyssel Historiske Museum.
