Landskabs- og Landbrugsmuseet
Open-air and agricultural museum in Mosbjerg near Sindal: a smallholding around 1915 with old livestock breeds, a collection of tools, and hiking trails – free admission.
About the museum
The Landskabs- og Landbrugsmuseet is the branch of Vendsyssel Historiske Museum in Mosbjerg near Sindal. It comprises two state-owned farms, Højen and Bjørnager, in a hilly landscape with deep ravines, burial mounds, and old forests.
Its centerpiece is a smallholding from Refsnæs near Vrå. The carpenter Jens Anton Hansen built it in 1899 with a workshop between the stable and the living quarters; when he expanded his farming, part of the workshop had to make way for an additional horse stall. In 1977, the house was demolished, and in 1982 the museum rebuilt it near Højen. Since then it has been run as a working open-air museum: on roughly five tønder of land, fields and animals of old breeds are managed with tools and methods of the period around 1915, and during the summer and autumn holidays, "smallholder families" live in the house.
At Højen, an exhibition explains the geological origin and development of the landscape; from there, marked paths lead past antiquities and traces of cultural history. In the stable and barn at Bjørnager, a large agricultural exhibition shows machinery and tools from about 1880 to 1950 – from the time before the tractor and the power grid – with picture and text panels on daily life in the countryside. The highlights of the year are Harvest Day in August and Potato Day during the autumn holidays.
