Victor Petersens Willumsen-samling
Largest private collection of sketches and works by J. F. Willumsen at the manor Odden near Hjørring, with a café in the old manor kitchen.
About the museum
The manor Odden near Mygdal northeast of Hjørring owes its name to its location on a headland that was formerly surrounded by water. The present buildings date from the 16th century. For centuries the estate, whose lands once extended as far as Skagen, belonged to high-nobility families before passing into middle-class hands in the 19th century. A north wing was probably demolished around 1800, and later land was sold and the surrounding water drained.
In 1989 the foundation Victor Petersens Willumsen-samling took over the manor and has since shown there the collection assembled by Victor Petersen and his family. It is regarded as the largest private collection of works by J. F. Willumsen (1863–1958) and as the largest collection of sketches by a single artist in Denmark.
Because the collection consists mainly of sketches and preparatory work, Willumsen's working process can be traced here from the first draft to the finished work. In this way Odden complements the Willumsens Museum in Frederikssund, which mainly shows completed works; the two venues cooperate closely. In the former manor kitchen there are coffee and cake, you can stay overnight in the cavalier wing, and paths lead from the manor into the forest and to Odden Møllesø.
