About the museum

The museum goes back to typographers of the local newspaper "Ny Dag", who joined forces in 1995 with early retirees and pensioners. After the newspaper ceased publication, they received part of the printing equipment on the condition that they move it into two rooms of the old newspaper building on Jernbanegade. With an annual grant from the municipality and money from local foundations, the museum officially opened on May 1, 1997.

The building at Jernbanegade 8 served as Nakskov's post office from 1905 to 1930. After that, the Social Democratic local newspaper moved in, which from 1950 was called "Ny Dag" and ran its editorial office, typesetting room and rotary press here until 1981. Today the building, as "Historiens Hus", houses the town's local archive; the print shop is in the basement.

The typesetting machine they brought along proved to be beyond repair, so the museum took over a working Linotype from Sakskøbing, which was replaced in 2012 by an Intertype from 1965. An Eickhoff printing press from Rødby and a Heidelberger platen press were added. Around 20 volunteers keep the machinery running and have printed a booklet of their own on the history of Nakskov almost every year since 1999, sold at the museum.
