Den Gamle Smedje
Historic smithy on Tilegade in Nakskov, which as a working museum shows the workshop, forge and centuries-old tools.
About the museum
Tilegade is considered Nakskov's oldest street and was for a long time the lane of the craftsmen. Smithing has been done on plot no. 21 for more than 250 years; the smith's residence had already acquired its present appearance by 1855, a side wing in the courtyard was rebuilt in 1886, and the complex also included a stable. Around 1911, eight journeymen and three apprentices worked here.
When the last master smith, Svend Skotte, closed the workshop in 1986, a foundation for the preservation of the smithy was established in 1987, which has since run it as a working museum. Volunteers, including retired smiths, demonstrate the old craft. Because of a neighboring house in danger of collapse, the museum had to close for about a year and a half and reopened on June 5, 2018.
On view are the original forge and tools, some of which are over 200 years old. A set of implements from 1833 found in the attic went to the local archive. The smithy also takes part in events in Nakskov and the surrounding area.
