Nakskov Skibs- og Søfartsmuseum
Volunteer-run museum in Nakskov on the history of the local shipyard and its ships, in new premises on Klostergade since 2024.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1996, driven by the commitment of former shipyard workers, seamen, and harbor workers and supported by the town of Nakskov, the local Marineforeningen, companies, and private individuals. In May 1997 the first exhibition opened in a building directly on the harbor quay.
At the center is the Nakskov Skibsværft, where ships were built for about 70 years. Among the best-known vessels are the training ship Danmark, several DSB ferries, freighters of the East Asiatic Company (ØK), and the hospital ship Jutlandia. The collection includes numerous objects from shipyard operations, only part of which is on display; the rest is kept in storage.
In 2024 the museum moved to new premises on Klostergade near the pedestrian zone and the harbor and redesigned its entire exhibition in the process. The same building also hosts an exhibition on the polar explorer Peter Freuchen, which can be visited with the same ticket.
