Randbøl Sogns Museum
Volunteer-run local history museum and local archive in Vandel with a schoolroom, farmhouse parlor, toys, and an exhibition on Vandel Airfield.
About the museum
The foundation was laid by Mogens Jensen, born in 1854 on the Lindegård farm in Vandel, who offered the Randbøl parish council a sizable collection of mostly Stone Age finds from the area in the 1920s. On December 2, 1931, it officially became the Randbøl Sogns Museum.
For its first decades the collection was kept in the basement and attic of the Vandel school, and between 1944 and 1950 it was even moved out to an old brick kiln. For a long time it was mainly teachers who looked after the museum. In 1982 it moved into the former double teachers' residence on Grindstedvej in Vandel, where it remains today; later the municipality took over its administration.
Today the association Randbøl Sogns Lokalarkiv og Museum runs the museum together with the parish's local archive, supported by volunteers. On display are typical objects from homes and households in the area since about 1850: a 1930s schoolroom, a farmhouse parlor from around 1900, the shops and business life of Vandel from the 1940s to the 1960s, a hundred years of toys, and a best parlor with furniture from Randbøldal Castle. A separate section is devoted to Vandel Airfield, which the German occupying forces built in 1943 and which remained in military use until 2003. The offering is rounded out by changing displays and a climate project.
