Vingsted Jernalder
Denmark's largest reconstructed Iron Age village near Bredsten in the Vejle Ådal – freely accessible, with farmsteads, animals, a sacrificial bog and hands-on days.
About the museum
Inspired by the experimental center in Lejre, volunteer teachers and archaeologists began in 1976 to rebuild Iron Age houses in the valley between the Vingsted Sø and today's Bindeballestien cycle path. The site initially served as a learning venue for schoolchildren of the then Egtved Kommune. From 1992 educational workshops were added in the restored water mill Vingsted Mølle on the Vejle Å; together the two form Vingsted Historiske Værksted.
In 2007 the Vejle Kommune took over operations, and the grounds opened up to all visitors with living history programs and tours. Today it belongs, as Vingsted Jernalder, to Vejlemuseerne, together with Kulturmuseet and Vejle Kunstmuseum.
The Iron Age environment unites replicas of houses from various Jutland sites – the chieftain's farm Steppinggården, the farmstead Overbygård, the Hoddegården with pottery and forge, and the Vorbassehuset – with fields of ancient crops, a sacrificial bog and domestic animals of old breeds. Every year 3,000 to 4,000 schoolchildren live here for one to three days as in the Iron Age; in summer history families move into the houses. A new welcome area with a picnic house, play tower and obstacle course was built with the help of volunteers.
