About the museum

Egtved Museum is a private local museum run on a volunteer basis by the Egtved Museumsforening, an association founded in 1982. Its home is Højvanggaard on the street Aftensang in the middle of Egtved, a former farm whose origins go back to 1684. The buildings belong to Vejle Municipality; the association has leased them and now uses the farmhouse, the former barn and stable wings, and a small wash house.

Repeated fires changed the farm over the centuries; the former half-timbered buildings were gradually replaced by brick buildings, and the present appearance dates from 1876. An exhibition in the farmhouse traces this building history and the people who lived on the farm.

In the farmhouse, a period room presents finds from the surrounding area from the Stone Age through the Bronze Age and Viking Age to the 1970s; a separate area is devoted to the Bronze Age and the famous find of the Egtved Girl. A town model shows Egtved in 1898, when the narrow-gauge railway to Kolding opened, which ran until 1930. There are also a furnished best parlor with a dining room from around 1900, rooms on the school and music history of the town, agriculture, crafts, toys, needlework, and a collection of carriages.

The north wing contains a small café and a hall for up to about 100 people, where lectures, the St. John's Eve celebration, a Christmas market, and children's activity days take place. Every year the association also organizes Egtvedpigens Dag (Egtved Girl Day).
