About the museum

The museum goes back to an initiative by the Danish glass artist Finn Lynggaard. Supported by an international network of artists who donated or lent works, as well as by local patrons and the friends' association "Glasmuseets Venner," it opened in 1986 as Glasmuseet Ebeltoft.

Its first home was Ebeltoft's former customs house, a listed building by architect Hack Kampmann with a view over the bay. In 2006, a modern extension by the firm 3XN with around 970 square meters was added; in 2010, the museum garden was created, where glass sculptures now stand.

The collection comprises just over 1,800 works of Danish and international glass art from the period since 1980 and thus documents above all the studio glass movement, which gained a foothold in Denmark in the 1980s. It was assembled with the help of more than 700 artists from around the world.

In 2023, the museum was renamed "Glas – Museet for glaskunst." Alongside changing exhibitions, it shows the entire collection, several large-scale installations, and a workshop where glassblowers work in front of an audience.
