About the museum

The Djurslands Jernbanemuseum was founded in 1981. The impetus came from the Ryomgård citizens' association, the association for the preservation and expansion of the Djursland railways, and the former traffic inspector W. M. Rosenvinge from Grenå. The location was an obvious choice: since 1877 Ryomgård had been the railway hub of Djursland, from which trains ran to Aarhus, Randers, and Grenaa, and from 1911 also on the private line to Gjerrild. Initially the small museum was housed in the former post office of the station building, where Rosenvinge welcomed guests in person; his Gauge 0 model railway, built from 1935, can still be seen today.

With over a thousand objects, space soon became tight. In 1995, with the help of the then Midtdjurs Kommune, the museum was able to buy the old DSB locomotive shed together with the association Djursland for fuld Damp and reopened there the same year. Since January 1, 2007, it has been an independent department of the Dansk Jernbane-Klub with its own operating committee; it is run exclusively by volunteers and financed by admission fees as well as grants from Syddjurs Kommune and the club.

The exhibition shows rail traffic of times past, especially on Djursland: permanent exhibitions are devoted to the Gjerrildbane, the Ebeltoftbane, and the Randers–Ryomgård line, along with uniforms, ticket punches, signaling technology, a station office, a signal box, and a model of the DSB central workshop in Aarhus. In the locomotive shed and on the roughly one-hectare grounds with tracks and a turntable stand vehicles such as steam locomotives, a Skagensbane locomotive by Frichs, handcars, a snowplow, and freight cars.
