Karlsladen
Visitor center of the Mols Bjerge National Park in a thatched barn from 1727 on the Kalø estate – prehistory, Middle Ages, and hunting, free admission.
About the museum
The Karlsladen was built in 1727 as a grain barn of the Kalø estate in the Holstein half-timbered style; older timber may also have been reused for the heavy oak framing. It received its name around 1930: the estate manager wanted to distinguish it from a second barn and named it after Karl, the Ladefoged responsible for the grain store. Over time the building housed grain lofts, a pigsty, and later a mill; from 1941 it had a tile roof instead of thatch.
The Kalø estate belonged to the Holstein Jenisch family until 1945 and passed into Danish state ownership after the Second World War; today it is managed by the Naturstyrelsen. As part of the establishment of the Mols Bjerge National Park, the barn was extensively restored, received a thatched roof again, and opened as a visitor center on June 16, 2013.
The exhibition presents the nature and cultural history of the area – with a focus on prehistory, the Middle Ages with the nearby Kalø castle ruin, and hunting. Photos and short themed stations invite exploration; for children there is an interactive story about Gustav Vasa, who was held prisoner at Kalø. The building is freely accessible year-round and is a starting point for hikes to the Slotsruin.
