About the museum

In the 16th century King Christian II brought Dutch farmers to the island of Amager. They were to supply the court and the markets of København with vegetables and received special royal privileges in return. Store Magleby, where they settled, is still called "Hollænderbyen" (the Dutch town) today. The Amager farmers became known as vegetable growers and developed their own splendid costume culture, from which their prosperity can be read.

The museum was founded in 1922 and is housed in two of the oldest four-wing half-timbered farmsteads in Store Magleby. For a long time it was called Amagermuseet; in 2026 it received the name Hollændergårdene. Today it belongs to Museum Amager, which runs several visitor sites in Dragør.

On display are original farmhouse parlors, an extensive collection of Amager costumes and embroideries for various occasions, and paintings by Julius Exner, who captured the life of the Amager farmers in the 19th century. One exhibition tells of 500 years of Dutch history and of vegetable growing. In the kitchen garden, volunteers grow old vegetable varieties and dahlias, including varieties bred on Amager; in the summer half-year pigs and goats live on the farm.
