About the museum

The foundation was laid by the municipality of Tårnby in 1968: at the suggestion of the Amager art association, it began building an art collection with a focus on prints, which was later to become a museum. After the restoration of the Kastrupgård country house, the collection opened to the public in 1977, and two years later it received state recognition as a museum.

The main building goes back to Jacob Fortling, who, as a royal stonemason in the mid-18th century, quarried limestone from Saltholm and had a Rococo-style residence built near Kastrup. Of this first complex only the gatehouse survives; the house received its present yellow appearance after a fire under Ole Tønder Lange around 1800. Later a brewery and finally a nursery were part of the farm, before the municipality bought the property in 1957.

The museum grew step by step: in 1983 the south wing became an exhibition hall, in 1988 rooms in the main building were added, and in 2013 a comprehensive renovation with support from Realdania created new exhibition space in all four wings, a foyer and a café. Since 2025 the house has carried the addition "Museum for Moderne Grafisk Kunst."

The collection comprises about 7,000 graphic prints from the 20th century to the present, mostly by Danish and Nordic artists – woodcuts and linocuts, etchings and lithographs. Each year the museum shows several special exhibitions; in addition there is a historic printing press in the Krauserummet as well as paintings by Theodor Philipsen with motifs from Kastrup and Saltholm.
