Nykøbing Sj. Psykiatriske Museum

Museum on the history of psychiatry in the former hospital of Nykøbing Sjælland – with patient rooms, treatment rooms, chapel, and cemetery.

Opening hoursAdmission from DKK 60 Partially accessible

About the museum

The museum was founded in 1988 by former employees of the psychiatric hospital in Nykøbing Sjælland, supported by the then Vestsjællands Amt and the three former municipalities in Odsherred. It is an independent institution run by a four-member board and a director, and it depends on the efforts of volunteer guides, attendants, and helpers.

At first the collection was housed in the former security ward "Bakkegården". In April 2022 the museum moved to more central premises on the second floor of Annebergparken 28, the hospital's former sewing room in the middle of the Grønnegården building complex, which is now used as Anneberg Kulturpark. The complex, designed by architect Kristoffer Varming in the spirit of the "Bedre Byggeskik" movement, functioned like a small town with its own church, fire station, and forest cemetery; in the 1940s about 2,500 people lived here.

The exhibition uses re-created everyday situations with original furniture, instruments, and other objects from the hospital to show how patients and staff lived and how treatment methods changed over about 100 years. The museum also includes the chapel in the forest and the neighboring cemetery, where some patients were buried after their brains had been removed for research. Tours of the grounds tell the story of the red and yellow hospital buildings.
