Tun-museet
Small exhibition in the old equipment shed at the harbor of Odden about the catching of bluefin tuna off Sjællands Odde between 1920 and 1960.
About the museum
The exhibition commemorates a short but remarkable episode in Danish fishing: between about 1920 and 1960, bluefin tuna followed the herring and mackerel shoals into the Kattegat, and the fishermen of Odden Havn turned the big predatory fish into an additional source of income. Soon sport anglers from Germany, England and Sweden also traveled to the northern tip of Zealand, and for some years the harbor was regarded as an international meeting place for deep-sea angling. Around 1960 the tuna stopped coming; today the species is considered severely endangered throughout the Atlantic.
Under the title "Tun & tunfiskere", the ethnologist Jan Steen Jacobsen developed, together with the artist Charlotte Bøgh, an exhibition that was set up in the old equipment shed of the trap fishermen opposite the marina and opened on June 6, 2014. It connects the natural history of the tuna and its long migrations with the local history of Havnebyen.
On display are fishing gear, text and picture panels and a short film about tuna fishing. A special piece is the mounted head and tail of a tuna weighing 472 kilograms that was still caught off Odden in 1981.
