About the museum

The museum goes back to a private exhibition of old objects from Odsherred that the senior teacher H. F. C. Steincke and his wife showed in Nykøbing Sjælland in 1909. In the same year, a circle of citizens from across the area decided to found the Odsherreds Folkemuseum; it was housed in an old school building in town. The collection grew quickly and soon included finds from the Bronze Age, an extensive coin collection, and weapons and costumes of the region.

In the early 2000s the museum moved to the manor Annebjerggård on the southern edge of Nykøbing; in 2004 the garden of old medicinal and useful plants, whose roots lie in the original town museum, also moved there. Since the merger at the turn of the year 2012/2013, the museum has belonged to Museum Vestsjælland.

In October 2024 the Odsherred Museum opened in the former Grundtvigskole in the town center. The exhibition "Glimt" shows highlights from over 4,000 years of the landscape's history, and volunteers turned the schoolyard into a garden with about 175 plants formerly used for medicine, dyeing and superstition. The move is regarded as a first step toward a new joint museum for geology, archaeology, history and art in Odsherred.
