About the museum

Randers Kunstmuseum was founded in 1887 and is one of the oldest art museums in Denmark. It is an independent, state-recognized institution. Since 1969 it has been located on the third floor of the Kulturhuset in the city center, an exposed-concrete building by the architect Flemming Lassen that is counted as Brutalist in style and is connected to the former technical school. The museum shares the building with the city library and Museum Østjylland.

The core of the museum is the permanent collection of predominantly Danish art from the early 19th century to the present, including works by C. W. Eckersberg, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Michael and Anna Ancher, L. A. Ring, and Theodor Philipsen. A major work is Ring's painting "Sommerdag ved Roskilde Fjord" from 1900, which was included in the Danish cultural canon. A section of its own is dedicated to the painter, sculptor, Dadaist, and poet Sven Dalsgaard, born in Randers, of whom the museum owns a good 1,200 works.

In its special exhibitions, the museum is particularly interested in artists on the margins of the established art world and likes to seek debate. Popular with children is the walk-in glass room "Kosmisk Rum" by the Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson, which is on view year-round.
