Det Grønne Museum
Denmark's national museum for hunting, forestry, agriculture, and food near Gammel Estrup in Auning – with farm animals, machines, and play areas.
About the museum
Det Grønne Museum is Denmark's national museum for hunting, forestry, agriculture, and food. It was created in 2016 from the merger of the Dansk Landbrugsmuseum with the Dansk Jagt- og Skovbrugsmuseum. Its roots go back to 1889, when the agricultural museum was founded, initially based in Kongens Lyngby.
Since 1972 the museum has used farm buildings of the manor Gammel Estrup on Djursland. In 2005 the state additionally acquired a former potato flour factory in Auning, adding about 6,000 square meters of exhibition space. Around the museum there are also about 60 hectares with a historic kitchen garden, organic farming, and old Danish farm animal breeds.
The collection comprises more than 77,000 objects. Eight permanent exhibitions span 6,000 years – from the clearing of forests in the Neolithic period through the mechanization of agriculture to present-day Danish food culture. In the Polakhuset, the last surviving farmhand dwelling on the estate, the life of farmworker families around 1915 comes to life, and in Madens Hus, food history becomes something you can cook along with.
The museum is under the Danish Ministry of Culture. Your admission ticket also gives access to the neighboring manor museum Gammel Estrup.
