About the museum
The house museum presents the lives of two outstanding Saaremaa people: the linguist Johannes Aavik (1880–1973) carried out the reform of the Estonian language, and the music teacher, choir conductor and organist Joosep Aavik (1899–1989) shaped the musical life of Saaremaa for more than fifty years.
At the end of the 19th century the house plot in Kuressaare belonged to the gardener Johann Brenner. It was bought by the merchant Jakob Aavik for his brother Mihkel Aavik, who moved here with his family on 1 April 1896. Johannes Aavik lived in the parental home as a schoolboy in 1898–1902 and later, in 1919–1926, taught Estonian at the Saaremaa Ühisgümnaasium (Saaremaa Joint Gymnasium). From 1961 to 1989 the house was the home of Joosep Aavik. The house museum opened as a branch of the Saaremaa Museum on 19 June 1992.
