About the museum
The Kaali crater is Estonia’s largest natural rarity; its meteorite origin was proven first in Europe and second in the world. In fact there are nine meteorite craters at Kaali. The museum building opened in 2005 and was built using traditional construction methods: the walls are laid of hand-hewn limestone, the ceilings are wooden and the roofs are of stone.
The museum presents the origin, composition and impact of meteorites on the Earth, and the story of the fall of the Kaali meteorite. A rare exhibit is a 96-kilogram piece of the Sikhote-Alin iron meteorite. A separate display tells the history of Saaremaa limestone, its use as a building material and its influence on local architecture.
