About the museum
The Tootsi briquette factory was built in 1937–1939 to use the peat reserves of the Pööravere bog and was at the time Estonia’s most modern industrial enterprise. Briquette production began in 1939; a workers’ settlement was built next to the factory.
The aim of MTÜ Eesti Turbamuuseum is to preserve the former Tootsi briquette factory and to organise bog trips by train. The factory rooms have been tidied up and renovated, and much of the work was done by volunteers.
Visitors are introduced to peat as a mineral resource and its processing, the history of the briquette factory and the history of Tootsi settlement. The settlement’s clock tower, which has shown the correct time since 25 April 1972, is also used as an observation tower.
