About the museum
The Tori Muuseum was founded on 10 May 1934 by the Tori Muuseumiühing (Tori Museum Society) and was the first parish museum in Estonia. The society was led by the painter and antiques collector August Pulst, who was born in Tori parish. The museum’s first object was a beer jug.
During the Second World War the museum was liquidated and its assets were transferred to the Pärnu Museum. The museum was reopened on 29 December 1989 as a branch of the Eesti Põllumajandusmuuseum (Estonian Agricultural Museum), under the name Tori Hobusekasvanduse Muuseum (Tori Horse-Breeding Farm Museum). In 1997 the branch’s assets were transferred free of charge to the Tori rural municipality government, and the museum was renamed Tori Muuseum.
The museum collects materials and information on the history and present of Tori, and organises tours, exhibitions, museum lessons and local history days. The exhibits are housed in the manor granary built in 1814, with round-log walls and a shingle roof; the archive and the employee’s workroom are in the community house.
