About the museum
The Tori hobusekasvandus (Tori Horse-Breeding Farm) was founded in 1856 on the grounds of Tori manor with the aim of breeding a hardy and undemanding Estonian horse; it is considered the oldest in Estonia. At first 47 Estonian mares and seven stallions were bought. The Tori breed began in 1892, when the stallion Hetman (born 1886) was brought from Poland for crossbreeding; his descendants won many prizes at international exhibitions.
The farm is located in Estonia’s oldest renovated stable complex, at the entrance to Soomaa National Park. The exhibition “Tori pööning” (Tori Loft) shows, among other things, Hetman’s preserved skeleton. In addition, finely carved horse figures by Voldemar Luht are on display; for children there are a cave and strength tests.
On site you can book excursions, riding, lessons and special horse programmes. The farm belongs to the network of Estonian rural museums.
