About the museum
Since 1993 the Käsmu Maritime Museum has been housed in a Tsarist-era border guard cordon building built in 1894, and presents the history of the legendary captains’ village. The museum was created by Aarne Vaik, who opened it on Midsummer Day 1993. In 2011 Vaik was awarded the Order of the White Star, Fifth Class, for long-term activity in promoting the cultural life of the Käsmu coastal village, preserving local maritime history and creating the museum.
The museum is a private museum consisting of what has been collected over its years of operation. The exhibits cover all areas related to the sea: seafaring, fishing and smuggling, the sea as part of nature, and themes of photography and the visual arts. In the museum yard there is an anchor from the time of the Great Northern War, found beneath Naissaar during dredging work. The unique Käsmu lighthouse can also be visited.
For children, museum days are organised on the main themes of the captains’ village and the Viking Age, and the orienteering programme “Aardejaht” (Treasure Hunt) is popular. The museum is usually visited by over 400 tours a year, or about 40,000 visitors.
