About the museum
The first written mention of Sagadi Manor dates from 1469. Construction of the manor’s new stone residence began in 1749 during the era of the Fock family and was completed in four years. The rococo building was exceptional in Estonian manor architecture. In 1793 the manor house was rebuilt in the early classicist style, and this appearance has been preserved to the present day. In 1894 a colonnaded balcony in pseudo-baroque style was added to the park side. Sagadi has been called the most manorial of Estonia’s manors.
After the land reform of 1919, the former owner of the manor was left only the manor centre. In 1929 Sagadi Primary School moved into the manor house, where it worked until 1973. In 1977 the manor centre passed to the Rakvere forest management, and the renovation of the buildings began. In 1987 the renovated manor building was opened to visitors, and both the forest museum and an exhibition of manor-era furniture found their place there.
Today the museum consists of two parts. In the former barn and cart cellar is the immersive forest museum, completed in 2022, with the exhibition “Metsane teekond” (A Forest Journey), and the manor house is a historic manor museum that displays manor architecture and interiors with period-accurate furniture. The museum’s collections contain nearly 25,000 items.
