About the museum
The Naissaare militaarmuuseum (Naissaare Military Museum) is located in the Lõunaküla area of the island, in a former Soviet officer’s residence from the time when Naissaar was a closed military area. The building gives a direct picture of everyday life on the island in Soviet times and helps one understand the role Naissaar played in the defence of Tallinn Bay.
The exhibition presents the history and development of the coastal fortresses, the island’s place in the defence systems of different eras, and the life of the local residents in hard times. Information boards give an overview of Naissaar’s military sites, their location and use. On display are military equipment and objects typical of the era, shell casings and weapon parts, photos, and Soviet army technology and propaganda prints.
The museum belongs to the Naissaare visitor centre, which is run by SA Rannarahva Muuseum. From the harbour, a narrow-gauge railway runs towards the Männiku settlement of the Soviet era in Lõunaküla, and the train travels along it.
