About the museum
The Viimsi vabaõhumuuseum (Viimsi Open-Air Museum) is a complex of coastal farms more than 150 years old in the village of Pringi on the Viimsi peninsula, under state protection as a cultural monument. Its main part is the historic Kingu coastal farm, which dates from the 1820s; the oldest building on the farm is a barn house built in the mid-19th century. The farm was a prosperous tenant farm where both fishing and farming were carried on.
On the farm’s land there are, in addition, reconstructed small fishermen’s houses of Krüger and Silberfeldt, net sheds, boat winches and vabad (a traditional Estonian term). In the earth cellar next to the barn house is the exhibition “Spirdivedajad ja smugeldajad” (Spirit Carriers and Smugglers) on the illegal alcohol trade of the early 20th century. From the museum’s shore there is a view of Tallinn. On Saturdays a farmers’ market takes place in the museum yard.
