About the museum
A wooden residence with a mantel chimney stood on plot Pikk 50 already in the early 1780s, when its owner was the tailor master Johann Christian Kiegel from Hanover. Over the next hundred years the property changed owners several times. The house belonged longest to the confectioner Adolf Sidron and his heirs, from 1877 to 1975. Other craftsmen also lived on the property, for example a saddler, a tanner and a cart-wright.
The idea of showing the life and work of Rakvere town burghers in the Tsarist period arose among the staff of the Rakvere Museum in the 1970s. The Town Burgher’s House Museum opened on a formal basis in December 1983. It was unique in Estonia and throughout the Baltic region, because it was not dedicated to a particular person or theme, but to the town burgher as such.
Visitors are welcomed by the mantel chimney in the middle of the house. On one side are furnished living rooms from the late 19th and early 20th centuries: a living room, a bedroom, a dining room and a kitchen. On the other side visitors can see the furnishings of a 1930s flat and a tailor’s workshop. In the courtyard building there is a small shoemaker’s workshop and a laundry.
