About the museum
The Kunda muuseum was founded in 1967 as a branch of the Riiklik Rakvere Muuseum (Rakvere State Museum) and has been housed from the start in the office building of a cement factory completed in 1898, which is entered in the register of cultural monuments. In 1993 the museum was handed over to the town of Kunda. In 2004 the foundation Virumaa Muuseumid took over the museum, and it was renamed the Kunda tsemendimuuseum; since 2010 the museum has again been an institution of the local government.
The exhibition is entirely about cement. Visitors learn how cement was invented and introduced, what the production process is, and which kilns and factories worked in Kunda. The attraction “Tuikuv tunnel” (“Flickering Tunnel”) lets visitors experience what it is like to be inside a rotary kiln, and the museum’s collection of handprints of well-known Estonians is growing.
