About the museum
The museum operates in the former parsonage next to the St Nicholas’ Church of Viru-Nigula; in its centre is a mantel chimney preserved from the 14th–15th century. The parsonage and the church manor were plundered and burned by Russian troops in 1658, and the church manor was restored by four neighbouring manors. In the Soviet period the building was used as a hospital and a boarding school. The museum was set up in the building in 1986.
The exhibition shows the pastors who lived in the parsonage, including the language and literary man Otto Wilhelm Masing, who worked in Viru-Nigula for twenty years, the history of the church manor and church, and the educational and cultural life of the parish since the 19th century. Separate displays are devoted to the deportations and the collective farm era, and old horse carts and field tools are in the former barn of the parsonage.
