About the museum
After the completion of Sangaste Castle, the planning of the round stable and the water tower began under the direction of the architect Paul Alisch; the buildings were completed in 1887. Beside the main part of the round stable were rooms for horse carriages, storerooms and living rooms for stable boys; horses were trained in the inner courtyard. Later the count’s cows kept their herd in the building, and during the occupation the collective farm office, the cowherding service and storerooms were housed there. Only the external walls and a small part of the internal walls have survived from the original building.
In 2019 the building was saved from complete decay with support from the Enterprise Estonia (EAS) and renovated. Today the round stable is an experience centre, where the exhibition “Rukkikrahv ja Ilmaimed” takes visitors back to the period 1845–1938, when the car, electricity, the telephone and the aeroplane were invented. The exhibits can be touched and used.
